Peter Obi advocates leadership measured by impact on lives

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2027 election, has called for a new standard in leadership, one that is judged by its tangible positive effects on the lives of ordinary citizens. Obi made these remarks as the special guest of honor at a significant empowerment program organized by Prof. Lilian Orogbu, the member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Orogbu's initiative saw the distribution of a wide array of items aimed at improving livelihoods, including cars, shuttle buses, tricycles, motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers, and generating sets to over 500 constituents. The program also included the awarding of scholarships to selected students, underscoring a commitment to educational access within the constituency. Obi lauded these efforts, stating that such programs are vital for enhancing living standards, combating poverty, and addressing broader social challenges.

During his address, Obi expressed deep concern over the prevalent issues of unemployment, the state of the education and healthcare sectors, and pervasive insecurity across Nigeria. He directly linked many of these national problems to what he described as flawed governance and mismanagement of public resources. Reaffirming his vision for the nation, Obi asserted that competent and accountable leadership is the key to overcoming hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship. He also urged Nigerians to demand credible elections in 2027, advocating for the rejection of electoral malpractice and the upholding of principles of equity, justice, and fairness.

Professor Orogbu explained that the empowerment program was a gesture of appreciation for her supporters and constituents who backed her in the 2023 general elections. She noted the substantial support received, with over 36,000 votes and more than 5,000 active campaign participants. Acknowledging that not everyone could be accommodated in this phase, Orogbu announced plans for a subsequent empowerment round scheduled for November 2026. She encouraged beneficiaries to utilize the provided items productively, emphasizing the program's dual purpose of welfare support and economic intervention to create employment and bolster family incomes across her constituency. The Anambra State Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, and Senator Chief Victor Umeh also spoke, commending Orogbu's commitment to her constituents and her effectiveness as a representative.
