Sauðárkrókur, Iceland, is buzzing with activity as the UMFÍ Youth National Tournament draws around 5,000 participants aged 11 to 18. Despite earlier forecasts predicting poor weather, attendees are enjoying sunshine and mild temperatures, allowing them to compete in shorts.

Here people are just in shorts and the weather is wonderful right now, I'm looking over the area which is teeming with life.

The tournament offers a wide array of over 20 different disciplines, moving beyond typical sports like basketball and golf to include activities such as cake decorating and spelling bees. This broad approach aims to let young people try as many activities as possible, with many participants engaging in six to seven different events.

Ómar Bragi Stefánsson, the event's executive director, highlighted the inclusive nature of the competitions. "The main goal for us is to let the kids try as many disciplines as possible," he stated. He noted the significant participation in events like chess, with around 100 participants, and the upcoming cake decorating competition, which will feature 550 young contestants.

We had just about 100 kids competing in a chess tournament earlier today, which is huge, and we have 550 kids who will compete in cake decorating tonight.

Beyond the competitive events, the tournament provides extensive entertainment. Evening concerts featuring artists like Maron Birnir and SZK are scheduled, alongside a pool party. For younger children, an "adventure world" and a "superhero run" with races and challenges offer engaging activities. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily, ensuring a full schedule for everyone involved.
