Pitstop Community hosts maiden triathlon in Lagos

Lagos buzzed with energy as fitness enthusiasts converged for the inaugural Pitstop Community Super Sprint Triathlon, a landmark event dedicated to championing healthy lifestyles and cultivating grassroots sports development within Nigeria.

The whole idea is to give back to society and strengthen the grassroots. We want people to stay active, disciplined, and live a healthy lifestyle.

The picturesque setting of Pitstop Village in Ikoyi served as the backdrop for this pioneering initiative, which challenged participants through a demanding 150m swim, a vigorous 20km cycling leg, and a brisk 2.5km run. The competition was further sweetened by a substantial prize pool exceeding N2 million, drawing a diverse field of amateur and seasoned athletes eager to test their mettle.

Aminadab Adegboro, the visionary founder of Pitstop Community, articulated the initiative's core mission: to enrich society and fortify the foundations of local sports. "The whole idea is to give back to society and strengthen the grassroots," she stated, underscoring the community's commitment to fostering activity, discipline, and overall well-being. Adegboro highlighted Pitstop's evolution from a cycling group formed during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown into a comprehensive fitness collective that now embraces running and walking.

Echoing the enthusiasm, Wale Oladunjoye, President of the Nigeria Triathlon Union, lauded the event as a pivotal advancement for triathlon in the nation. "We have been looking for this kind of environment," he remarked, expressing optimism that such platforms will catalyze the sport's expansion and engagement. Oladunjoye also seized the moment to advocate for enhanced infrastructure, imploring governmental support to provide facilities conducive to hosting future competitions.

Among the day's standout performers was Preye Dede, who triumphed despite competing with a spinal injury. "I feel very excited," Dede shared, recounting his strategic approach to the race. He commended the organizers for establishing a vital platform, suggesting that events like these are crucial stepping stones for Nigeria to cultivate athletes capable of competing on the global stage, including the Olympics. The organizers have affirmed their intention to establish the triathlon as a regular fixture, with plans for quarterly editions, signaling a promising future for endurance sports in Lagos.
