PLN Restores Sabira Island Ecosystem with Mangrove and Coral Reef Restoration

PT PLN (Persero) Jakarta Raya is actively engaged in preserving the coastal ecosystem of Sabira Island through a comprehensive conservation program launched in 2022. This initiative extends beyond environmental restoration to encompass community empowerment and the development of a conservation-based economy.

Moch Andy Adchaminoerdin, General Manager of PLN UID Jakarta Raya, emphasized that the company's commitment to sustainability involves ensuring its operations benefit the surrounding communities. "For PLN, sustainability is not just about maintaining a reliable electricity supply, but also ensuring our presence provides broader benefits to the community," Andy stated.

The program has seen significant environmental action, with PLN and local residents planting 2,000 mangrove seedlings and transplanting 1,600 coral fragments to restore coastal ecosystems and marine habitats. Additionally, PLN has provided public internet access to reduce the islanders' isolation and expand information access.

For PLN, sustainability is not just about maintaining a reliable electricity supply, but also ensuring our presence provides broader benefits to the community.

Economically, PLN has introduced conservation fish aggregating devices (rumpon) that help fishermen reduce fuel consumption significantly. They are also assisting the UMKM Menara Sabira in modernizing seafood processing to extend shelf life and add value to products. Furthermore, PLN trains local youth as eco-tourism guides, fostering self-sufficient conservation education.

This integrated conservation model has led to the full independence of Sabira Island's youth as environmental protectors. PLN UID Jakarta Raya's efforts were recognized with a Platinum Alignment award and a CEPI Champion Candidate nomination at the Indonesia Green Awards 2026, highlighting the program's success and potential for replication.
