PM Rahman Apologizes for Chattogram Waterlogging, Calls for Waste Management Action

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has extended a sincere apology to the residents of Chattogram for the severe hardship caused by persistent waterlogging in the city. Addressing the issue raised in parliament by Chattogram-10 MP Sayeed Al Noman, the Prime Minister acknowledged the gravity of the situation, describing it as Chattogram's most significant problem and noting that many residents, particularly those without adequate housing, are living submerged in water.

There is a severe waterlogging. Naturally, it will take some time to address. For this suffering, I sincerely apologise to all citizens living in Chattogram city. We are trying to resolve this problem as quickly as possible.

Rahman assured that resolving the waterlogging crisis is a top priority and will take time, emphasizing that the government is actively working towards a swift solution. He recalled the past success of former President Ziaur Rahman's initiative to dig canals across Bangladesh, which helped mitigate floods and waterlogging, suggesting a return to such comprehensive water management strategies. The government has already commenced a program to excavate canals and clean drains, a necessary step given that urban waterways are frequently blocked by plastic waste, polythene, and bottles.

Waterlogging is Chattogram’s biggest problem. Right now, people are literally floating in water. Ordinary people without proper housing are living with water up to their necks. Many fear this problem will never be solved. I demand measures to eliminate waterlogging in Chattogram.

However, the Prime Minister stressed that government initiatives alone are insufficient. He highlighted the critical need for public awareness and responsible waste management. Rahman pointed out that canals become blocked again within days of cleaning due to careless dumping of waste. He urged Members of Parliament to play a role in raising public awareness, emphasizing that collective responsibility, involving both government action and public cooperation in managing waste, is essential to significantly reduce the problem of waterlogging in Chattogram and across the nation.
