PM Shehbaz directs major overhaul of agriculture sector

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is spearheading a significant reform of Pakistan's agriculture sector, aiming to drive sustainable economic growth. He has directed the immediate formulation of a comprehensive National Agriculture Policy, to be developed in close consultation with the provinces.

Central to the reforms is the restructuring of the Ministry of National Food Security, Research and Agricultural Reforms along modern lines. An apex forum for the agricultural sector will also be established, meeting monthly to ensure the effective implementation of an Agriculture Innovation and Growth Plan. The prime minister emphasized the importance of innovation and improving crop yields.

To bolster farmer access to financing, a nationwide awareness campaign will be launched for the Zarkhez Agricultural Loan Programme. Sharif also stressed the need to transform the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council into a true center of excellence. He highlighted the potential of improved seeds, modern farming technologies, and timely access to water and fertilizers to significantly increase per-acre crop yields. The focus will also extend to value addition, improved warehousing, and modern storage facilities for agricultural produce.

During a meeting, officials presented proposals for sector reforms. They informed the prime minister about the development of an AI-based mobile application to help farmers identify crop diseases and pests. The National Credit Guarantee Company Limited will provide financial support for agricultural loans. Recently approved policies include the National Seed Policy and the National Agriculture Biotechnology Policy, with consultations underway for a National Wheat Policy and livestock sector policies.
