Poland Accelerates Railway Modernization with Billions in New Trains and Investments Across Four Regions

Poland is embarking on a significant railway modernization drive, injecting billions of zlotys into new trains and infrastructure across four key regions. This ambitious project aims to transform passenger travel, boost regional connectivity, and leverage substantial European Union funding.

Currently, we are implementing the largest investment project in our history, which includes the purchase of 75 modern five-car electric multiple units ER160 Flirt, with a total contract value of over 4.8 billion zlotys gross.

Koleje Mazowieckie, a major beneficiary, is undertaking its largest investment project to date, acquiring 75 new Stadler Flirt electric multiple units worth over 4.8 billion zlotys. The company is a significant recipient of EU funds, with 64 of these new trains receiving over 1.5 billion zlotys in co-financing. Mateusz Kamola from Koleje Mazowieckie highlighted that the company is also expanding its technical facilities, opening a new base in Radom and planning an expansion in Sochaczew.

In the Łódź region, the Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna (ŁKA) has introduced the first of 14 new Pesa Elf 3.0 trains, a purchase costing over 455 million zlotys, with 300 million zlotys coming from sources like the National Reconstruction Plan. Joanna Skrzydlewska, Marshal of the Łódź Voivodeship, emphasized that cohesive transport is a major opportunity for regional development, noting ŁKA's dramatic ridership increase from just over 320,000 passengers in 2014 to 12 million last year. Maciej Sobieraj, CEO of ŁKA, stated that the new trains will enable the launch of new routes and increase service frequency.

Thanks to this purchase, we will be able to launch new connections, increase the frequency of trains, and reach new places.

Koleje Mazowieckie is also bolstering its fleet with 35 new trains already delivered by June, and plans to add 18 more Flirt trains by the end of the year, with all 75 expected by the end of 2027. The fleet will also include 16 Pesa trains for the Radom subregion and 10 diesel units for non-electrified lines. Mateusz Kamola noted that Koleje Mazowieckie served over 70 million passengers last year, a record for the company, and credited the modern trains with improving safety, comfort, and environmental impact.
