Poland's road construction boom: Over 290 km of new routes to open in 2026

Poland is experiencing a significant boom in road construction, with plans to open more than 290 kilometers of expressways and highways in 2026. This ambitious target is on track for completion, building on the nearly 163 kilometers of roads already made available to drivers this year.

Key projects completed in 2026 include four sections of the A2 highway between Siedlce Wschód and Biała Podlaska, four sections of the S6 expressway from Słupsk to Bożepola Wielkiego, and the second carriageway of the Kock and Wola Skromowska bypasses on the S19. Additionally, the national road DK19 Kuźnica–Sokółka and bypasses in Pułtusk (DK61), Wąchock (DK42), and Żukowo (DK20) have been opened.

Major construction firms, including Budimex, Mirbud, and Strabag, are at the forefront of these projects, leading in the number of contracts and the length of roads under construction for the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA). GDDKiA spokesperson Szymon Piechowiak confirmed that the S1 expressway section Bieruń–Oświęcim, including the Bieruń bypass, and the S19 Deniski–Haćki section are set to open this quarter. The second carriageway of S19 Sokołów Małopolski–Jasionka is being opened in segments, with the full completion planned by year's end.

The investment in road infrastructure is substantial, with GDDKiA set to spend 20 billion PLN this year alone, a level expected to be maintained at least until 2030. This marks a considerable increase from the average of 16.5 billion PLN spent annually over the previous five years. GDDKiA has also planned tenders for over 212 kilometers of roads in 2026, including 51 kilometers of bypasses.

Poland aims to develop a network of 7,980 kilometers of fast roads, including 2,100 kilometers of highways, by 2025. As of the end of 2025, nearly 5,466 kilometers of high-speed roads were available, comprising over 1,894 kilometers of highways and 3,571 kilometers of expressways. The ongoing investments position Poland as one of Europe's largest construction sites for road projects, with construction companies reporting multi-billion turnovers.

The first two kilometers were made available to drivers on July 28, and we plan to open the entire investment by the end of the year.
