Poles favor air raid sirens near borders during Ukrainian attacks

A majority of Poles believe air raid sirens should sound in the country's eastern regions when Russia launches missile attacks on western Ukraine, even if Polish airspace remains clear. A poll conducted by IBRiS for Rzeczpospolita found that 58.7% of respondents favor such preemptive warnings, while 27.2% disagree. This indicates a public desire for early alerts in the face of ongoing Russian aggression against neighboring Ukraine.

The sentiment is particularly strong in Poland's eastern voivodeships, including Podkarpacie, Lubelszczyzna, and Podlasie. In these border regions, 71% of residents are willing to accept the activation of sirens for attacks on western Ukraine, compared to 21% who oppose it. This heightened acceptance reflects a greater perceived proximity to the threat and a desire for immediate information.

This public opinion emerges in the wake of a concerning incident on July 30, when a Russian missile briefly entered Polish airspace over Tarnawa-Kolonia. Although the military's Operational Command did not detect any foreign object violating Polish airspace during a subsequent large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine on August 20, residents in eastern Poland did receive an SMS alert. Sirens were not activated on that occasion.

The government is considering various measures to enhance the national warning system. One proposal involves the Ministry of Interior and Administration potentially activating sirens even before Russian drones or missiles cross the Polish border. This reflects a shift towards a more proactive approach to civil defense, aiming to build societal resilience and ensure citizens are informed of potential aerial threats.
