Police deny unlawful detention of minor in Kwara community

The Kwara State Police Command has strongly refuted claims of unlawful detention involving a minor in the Arandun community, asserting that such narratives are misleading and inaccurate. The clarification addresses public outcry fueled by social media videos depicting a teenage girl at a police station, which some residents interpreted as an unjust arrest.

According to the command's spokesman, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the incident originated from a reported case of housebreaking and theft on April 30. The prime suspect, identified as Timothy Aransiola, reportedly absconded, and subsequent intelligence indicated that his sister, Esther Aransiola, aged 16, was harboring him and assisting his evasion of lawful arrest.

On 30th April 2026, at about 1600 hours, a case of housebreaking and theft was reported at the Arandun Police Division. The prime suspect, Timothy Aransiola (male, 19 years), who had been on the division’s watchlist, absconded following the report. Subsequent intelligence revealed that the suspect was being harboured and assisted to evade by one Esther Aransiola, ‘F’, 16 years, a sister of the suspect.

The police maintain that Esther was taken into custody on May 1, not for the initial crime, but for allegedly aiding and abetting the suspect. The command stressed that standard procedures were followed: the minor was cautioned, her statement was recorded, and she was subsequently released to her guardian on bond. The police urge the public to disregard unverified information and refrain from spreading content that could incite tension, reaffirming their commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens' rights.
