Police raid secessionist camp, recover arms, explosives in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to combating secessionist activities with a successful raid on a criminal camp in Owerre-Ezukala, Orumba South Local Government Area. This operation, a testament to the force's intelligence gathering and operational prowess, resulted in the recovery of a significant cache of sophisticated arms, ammunition, and explosives.

The Anambra State Police Command Operatives of the IGP’s Violent Crime Response Unit under the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, led by Chief Superintendent of Police Orebe Mathew, acting on information from a suspect already in custody: Nnamdi Ogbonna, male, aged 37 years, allegedly one of the top commanders of the proscribed secessionists group, on May 6, 2026, recovered sophisticated arms, ammunition, and explosive devices in a criminal camp at Owerre-Ezukala in Orumba South LGA.

The operatives of the Inspector General of Police’s Violent Crime Response Unit, under the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, led by Chief Superintendent of Police Orebe Mathew, executed the clearance operation based on crucial information provided by a suspect already in custody. This collaborative effort highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in dismantling criminal networks that threaten the peace and security of our state.

The exhibits include one General Purpose Machine Gun with about 2,000 rounds of live chain ammunition, two fabricated rocket launchers with 25 propellers, 10 locally made Improvised Explosive Devices, one locally-made Beretta pistol, two pump-action guns, three hand grenades, 10 rounds of K2 live ammunition, one gas cylinder and one black Ecolac box.

The recovered items, including a General Purpose Machine Gun with thousands of rounds, fabricated rocket launchers, and numerous Improvised Explosive Devices, underscore the dangerous capabilities of these secessionist groups. The successful dislodging of the insurgents, who fled with gunshot wounds after a fierce exchange, prevented a potential catastrophe. This action by the police is a vital step in safeguarding our communities from further violence and instability.
