Polish Defense Minister: F-16 pilot authorized to shoot down Russian missile

Poland's Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz provided a detailed account of the nation's response to a Russian cruise missile that violated Polish airspace early Tuesday morning. The incident occurred during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine.

Kosiniak-Kamysz explained that air defense systems were put on high alert shortly after midnight. At 1:29 a.m., all ground-based air defense systems across Poland entered a state of maximum vigilance. He noted that one of over twenty Russian missiles operating near the border approached within 5 kilometers of Polish territory before turning back towards Ukraine. When another object entered Polish airspace, a scrambled pair of fighter jets immediately intercepted it.

The minister also strongly criticized opposition politicians, particularly referencing the previous Law and Justice government's handling of a Russian missile incident in December 2022. That missile flew 400 km into Poland and was only publicly disclosed 131 days later after being found by chance. He also pointed out that the aerial refueling for the Polish F-16s during the operation came from Germany, underscoring the importance of Western partnerships.
