Polish government prepares further subsidies for farmers, targeting fuel and fertilizers

The Polish government is preparing a new package of financial aid for farmers, focusing on subsidies for fertilizer and fuel. Under the proposed regulations, farmers could receive up to 500 Polish zloty per hectare for documented fertilizer purchases made between March 1 and August 15, 2026. This subsidy is intended to offset the increased costs of mineral fertilizers compared to the period before the conflict in the Middle East.

In addition to fertilizer support, farmers will also benefit from a subsidy on diesel fuel used in agricultural production. The proposed amount is 0.52 Polish zloty per liter, covering documented fuel expenses incurred from March 1 to August 31, 2026. This measure aims to compensate for additional fuel costs experienced by farmers due to the ongoing crisis.

The support package is designed to comply with a European Commission implementing regulation from July 27, 2026, which provides for extraordinary financial assistance to farmers affected by economic profitability issues stemming from the Middle East crisis. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MRiRW) has outlined these measures in the government's work schedule, with the Council of Ministers expected to adopt the project in the third quarter of 2026.

Farmers eligible for the fuel subsidy must have received a decision on excise duty refund for agricultural diesel in 2026. The amount of aid for fuel will be calculated based on the quantity of diesel purchased, confirmed by invoices, and the limit for the excise duty refund for 2026. Currently, the excise duty refund for agricultural fuel stands at 1.48 Polish zloty per liter.
