Political cooperation formulas differ for each state, says UMNO leader

Kuala Lumpur – The approach to political cooperation and seat allocation for state elections must be tailored to the specific political landscape of each state, according to UMNO Vice President Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He stressed that a one-size-fits-all formula is inappropriate, as the political dynamics differ significantly from one state to another.

"One state to one state, the dynamics (politics) are different. You cannot use the same formula," Johari stated. He pointed to Melaka, where Barisan Nasional (BN) holds a two-thirds majority in the State Legislative Assembly, and Negeri Sembilan, which previously had a mixed government between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH), as examples of differing political contexts.

Johari, who is also the Member of Parliament for Titiwangsa, confirmed that negotiations between BN and Perikatan Nasional (PN) concerning seat distribution for the upcoming Melaka state election are being conducted at the presidential level. He clarified that he is not involved in these discussions and is unaware of their current progress.

He added that leaders like Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan have indicated that no formal talks with PN have yet taken place. The party leadership will determine how these negotiations will proceed.

Furthermore, Johari highlighted the importance of ensuring national political stability is not jeopardized by any political arrangements or collaborations. He explained that political stability is fundamental for economic development and investor confidence. "When political stability exists, investors are more confident to bring capital into the country to develop the economy," he noted. Any political cooperation must prioritize maintaining this stability to prevent concerns among investors regarding economic policies.
