Pope Leo XIV to Celebrate Mass at Sagrada Familia on Gaudí Centenary

Spain is preparing to welcome Pope Leo XIV for a significant visit from June 6-12, 2026, a trip that promises to be rich in both spiritual and symbolic meaning. A key highlight will be the Pontiff's celebration of Mass at Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Familia on June 10, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the death of its visionary architect, Antoni Gaudí. During this momentous occasion, Pope Leo XIV will also bless the basilica's tallest tower, a fitting tribute to Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece.

The Pope's itinerary is extensive, beginning in Madrid with an audience with King Felipe VI and a public Mass on June 7. He will then meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez before addressing the diocesan community at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. The visit to Barcelona follows, where he will lead an evening prayer vigil before the Sagrada Familia event. The journey extends to the Canary Islands, specifically Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, underscoring the Vatican's continued focus on the critical issue of migration, a concern also shared by Pope Francis.

This visit, the Pope's fourth abroad since his election in May 2025, comes at a sensitive time for the Spanish Church. It follows the recent signing of an agreement between the Spanish government and the Church to compensate victims of sexual abuse committed by clergy, a move that addresses years of controversy and opacity. The Spanish government is mobilizing a substantial security force, comprising over 13,000 police and civil guards, to ensure the safety of the Pope and the public during his week-long stay, which includes 22 scheduled speeches and homilies.
