Pope Warns of States' Difficulty Controlling Private AI Giants

Pope Francis has issued a stark warning regarding the growing power of private artificial intelligence (AI) giants and the struggle of nation-states to maintain control. Speaking at the Vatican during an audience with members of the Institut International des Sciences Administratives, the pontiff highlighted the risk of the common good being overshadowed by commercial interests.

"It is important that a certain ethic be established to accompany the use of these important tools which, unfortunately, are concentrated in the hands of large economic and technological actors, and which the State finds it difficult to control," the Pope stated. He urged for actions that ensure "the good of the human family is not sacrificed for private interests."

The rapid advancement of AI technologies prompts serious questions about future human oversight. "The speed at which innovations related to artificial intelligence (AI) are developing leads us to wonder if in the future these machines will be controllable, if man does not run the risk of becoming a victim of his own inventions," the Pope cautioned. He added that a significant contemporary problem is the increasing reliance on machines for decisions affecting human life.

Addressing the "worrying situation," Pope Francis underscored the "irreplaceable character of human intelligence in the face of these technological tools." He emphasized that the expertise of professionals can "help authorities make decisions in this area for the good of humanity." The pontiff encouraged participants to continue working towards the "humanization of digital technologies, so that they serve life and peace."
