Portugal boosts Slovakia troop presence to 156 amid security concerns

Portugal has significantly boosted its military presence in Slovakia, deploying 156 soldiers to reinforce NATO's eastern flank. This increase, from approximately 30 soldiers to around 160 over two years, underscores Portugal's commitment to the alliance, according to Portuguese Army Chief of Staff Eduardo Mendes Ferrão.

Mendes Ferrão cited the worsening security landscape and the return of conventional warfare to Europe as the primary drivers for this expansion. "High-intensity, large-scale conflict is no longer a distant scenario. It is a reality we witness daily," he stated, emphasizing the need for heightened military readiness.

The Portuguese contingent operates within a multinational NATO battle group led by Spain. This group is part of the alliance's measures to strengthen deterrence and defense on its eastern wing. The unit is equipped with advanced hardware, including Leopard 2A6 tanks, Pandur II armored vehicles, and VAMTAC ST5 tactical vehicles. It also incorporates capabilities for geospatial intelligence and unmanned systems, including testing technologies developed by the Portuguese defense industry.

Portugal has been part of the NATO battle group in Slovakia since 2022, established after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Beyond Slovakia, Portugal also has troops deployed in Romania with NATO and in the Central African Republic with the United Nations.
