Power outage in parts of the Reykjanes Peninsula

A significant power outage has struck the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, leaving major areas without electricity. The disruption occurred around 4 p.m. when three high-voltage power lines operated by Landsnet tripped, causing a widespread failure.

The immediate consequence of the line failure was the shutdown of the Svartsengi geothermal power plant. This has resulted in a complete loss of power in Grindavík, a town on the peninsula, and the world-famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. The plant's backup systems are currently operational to maintain essential functions like light and control equipment, as well as hot and cold water production, but its main electricity generation is halted.

Landsnet, the national power grid operator, is actively working to diagnose the cause of the malfunction. As of the latest reports, the duration of the power outage remains uncertain, leaving residents and businesses in the affected areas facing an inconvenient and potentially prolonged period without electricity. The specific lines that tripped were identified as Svartengislines one and two, and Njarðvíkurlína.
