Powerful 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan's Kumamoto, Killing Five and Injuring Dozens

A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Japan's southern Kumamoto prefecture on Tuesday, resulting in at least five fatalities and numerous injuries. The powerful tremor caused significant damage, including explosions at a shopping center, building collapses, widespread power outages affecting thousands of homes, and severe damage to roads across the affected region.

Rescue teams worked through the night following the earthquake. In one incident at the Aeon Mall Kumamoto, eight individuals were pulled from the site of an explosion that occurred shortly after the quake. Two women in their 20s were confirmed dead, while five others sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the Kumamoto Prefectural Government.

Emergency services, police, and members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces collaborated in extensive search operations, focusing on areas where people had called for assistance. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that authorities are still fully assessing the extent of the damage in the region, which experienced a devastating earthquake a decade ago. Approximately 300,000 residents were directed to temporary shelters, and aftershocks continued to be felt on Kyushu Island.

The earthquake's impact extended to industrial operations. Major companies like TSMC, Sony, and Fujifilm evacuated workers from their Kumamoto facilities. TSMC reported no damage to its facilities and is gradually resuming operations. However, Tokyo Electron suspended operations at two of its plants, and Honda halted production at its motorcycle factory in the prefecture. The epicenter was located about 20 kilometers south of Kumamoto City, the largest city in central Kyushu.
