Prabowo: PDIP's heart is actually with us

President Prabowo Subianto believes the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) fundamentally aligns with the ruling coalition parties, despite their current political distance. Speaking at the 28th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB) in Jakarta, Prabowo suggested that political separations are temporary and that parties can eventually reconcile.

"PDIP's heart is actually the same as ours," Prabowo stated. He emphasized that the core principles derived from the 1945 Constitution, established by the nation's founders, unite them. The primary difference, he noted, is PDIP's lack of formal recommendations, unlike those formulated by the Ulama Consultation. Prabowo also highlighted the value of constructive criticism, distinguishing it from slander, and asserted that truth and righteousness provide strength.

PDIP is currently the sole parliamentary party not included in President Prabowo's cabinet, nearly two years into his administration. In early July, PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri reiterated the party's political stance in an internal letter to party cadres. She clarified that Indonesia's presidential system does not formally recognize opposition or coalition blocs as constitutional categories.

Megawati stressed that Indonesian democracy is founded on popular sovereignty and constitutional supremacy, not power blocs. She warned against the centralization of power, which can weaken oversight mechanisms. A healthy democracy, she argued, requires a balance of power, respect for the constitution, and the moral courage to offer criticism for the nation's well-being. Without a balancing force, she stated, democracy loses its corrective capacity, and power risks diverging from the people's interests.
