Pray for Nigeria’s prosperity, Sanwo-Olu urges 2026 Hajj pilgrims

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called upon the faithful embarking on the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia to remember Nigeria and Lagos State in their prayers. Speaking at a seminar organized by the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, the governor, represented by Commissioner for Home Affairs Ibrahim Layode, stressed the spiritual significance of the Hajj, describing it as a profound act of worship that tests patience, endurance, and brotherliness.

You are among the few that Allah has chosen this year to answer His call to the Holy Land. Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, and it is a journey of faith, humility, and total submission to Allah.

Governor Sanwo-Olu specifically encouraged pilgrims to offer supplications for the peace, unity, and economic prosperity of Nigeria and Lagos State, particularly during the pivotal standing at Arafah. He also urged prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other national leaders, seeking divine wisdom and strength for effective governance. This appeal underscores the deep connection between faith and national well-being, a sentiment often expressed in Nigerian discourse.

The governor further charged the intending pilgrims to serve as exemplary ambassadors for Lagos State and Nigeria while in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He cautioned against engaging in political discussions or any activities that deviate from the spiritual purpose of Hajj, emphasizing discipline, lawfulness, and respect for Saudi culture and laws. This guidance reflects a common concern for maintaining national image abroad and ensuring the pilgrimage remains focused on its religious objectives, a perspective that resonates strongly within the community.

Lagos State anticipates approximately 1,600 pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj. The state government has reportedly made provisions to support their journey, aiming to enhance their experience. The emphasis on prayer for national development during religious observances highlights a unique aspect of faith in Nigeria, where spiritual aspirations are often intertwined with hopes for tangible progress and stability in the country.
