President Jokowi's Diploma Again Challenged in Court by UGM Alumnus

A legal challenge questioning President Joko Widodo's academic credentials has resurfaced, this time brought before the Surakarta District Court by an alumnus of Gadjah Mada University (UGM). The plaintiff, Sigit Pratomo, alleges unlawful conduct by the President, primarily due to his alleged failure to appear in court and present his original diploma. This marks another instance where Widodo's educational background is being scrutinized in a public forum.

The lawsuit names UGM and the Jakarta Metropolitan Police as co-defendants, suggesting an attempt to compel their involvement in verifying the diploma. The court's initial hearing on May 5 saw the absence of the principal parties, with only their legal representatives present. The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for May 19, emphasizing the need for all parties, particularly the Jakarta Police, to attend.

The principle is, our lawsuit does not acknowledge President Jokowi's diploma as original, but we want President Jokowi to attend the trial and show his diploma. Whether President Jokowi's diploma is original or not, he is the one who knows, and that's why we have positioned co-defendants Polda Metro Jaya and UGM to help President Jokowi show his diploma at PN Solo.

Widodo's legal team has refuted the claim of unlawful conduct, arguing that no court order has mandated the President to publicly display his diploma. This legal battle highlights a persistent undercurrent of skepticism regarding the President's qualifications, a narrative that has been amplified in certain political circles. From an Indonesian perspective, while academic credentials are often respected, the focus frequently shifts to a leader's performance and perceived connection with the populace, especially for a president who rose from humble beginnings.

In the rulings that have so far been examined and adjudicated, whether filed by Bambang Tri at the Central Jakarta District Court, or by Muhammad Taufiq, Top Taufan, and Bangun Sutoto. There is absolutely no court decree that orders or commands President Jokowi to show his UGM Forestry Faculty diploma to the public.
