Private security sector set for reform

Fiji is set to reform its private security sector through a comprehensive review of the Security Industry Act, marking the first such overhaul in 16 years. Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua highlighted the critical role private security firms play in protecting businesses, public facilities, and communities across the nation.

Speaking at an event for International Security Day, Tikoduadua acknowledged the contributions of licensed private security personnel in safeguarding critical infrastructure and supporting national security. The upcoming review intends to modernize the existing legal framework, enhance licensing and enforcement mechanisms, and streamline regulatory processes within the industry.

The government is collaborating with industry stakeholders to address compliance issues faced by legitimate security providers and to develop more efficient regulatory systems. A key focus will be on tackling illegal security operations, which the minister stated is crucial for protecting compliant businesses, upholding professional standards, and fostering public trust in the sector.
