Prominent Painter and Educator Štefan Bubán Has Died

Slovakia mourns the loss of Štefan Bubán, a distinguished painter and educator who passed away at the age of 93. Bubán's artistic journey was marked by significant transformations, evolving from his early focus on landscape painting to sophisticated abstract compositions that resonated deeply within the 20th-century art historical context. His unique imagination, deeply connected to his homeland, infused his work with a distinct "Bubánesque" quality.

Born in Pavlovce nad Uhom in 1932, Bubán's formal art education began at the Higher School of Pedagogical Studies in Prešov and continued at the Faculty of Education at Comenius University in Bratislava. Throughout his career, he was an active participant in both domestic and international art circles. He was associated with the Slovak Art Association (Umelecká beseda slovenská) from 1995 and was also involved with the Giuseppe de Nittis art group in Italy and the Societe d'Arts in Paris.

V roku 1955 ukončil štúdium vo výtvarnom odbore na Vyššej odbornej škole pedagogickej v Prešove, neskôr študoval na Pedagogickej fakulte Univerzity Komenského v Bratislave.

Bubán's international accolades include a Gold Plaque at the VII International Festival of Contemporary Painting in Sanremo, Italy (1999), the European Commission for Culture Award at the II Biennale Internazionale d'Arte il Nittis in Barletta, Italy (2003), and a Silver Medal at the international Salon in Cannes-Azur, France (2006). His works were also featured in long-term exhibitions at the Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic to the EU in Brussels from 2008 to 2016, and he regularly participated in the prestigious Salon d'Automne in Paris. His passing leaves a void in the Slovak art scene, but his legacy endures through his influential body of work.
