Provosts canvass skills acquisition, education reforms

The Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Education in Nigeria has issued a strong call for a fundamental transformation of the nation's teacher education system. Recognizing the evolving needs of the economy and the labor market, the committee advocates for a robust integration of skills acquisition and entrepreneurship into the core curriculum of Colleges of Education. This initiative, discussed at their 2nd Annual Conference in Abuja, aims to ensure that graduates are not only academically proficient but also equipped with the practical competencies required for self-reliance and job creation, thereby driving national development.

The theme of the conference, “Revolutionising Nigeria’s Colleges of Education System: Integrating Dual Mandate Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship for Educational and Economic Transformation,” aptly captures the urgency of this reform. The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, lauded the initiative, emphasizing its importance in repositioning Colleges of Education as catalysts for both educational excellence and economic growth. This dual mandate approach promises to empower graduates with the skills needed to innovate and contribute meaningfully to society, moving beyond traditional employment expectations.

The Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, represented by Professor Bashir Nuhu, also commended the initiative, aligning it with national priorities.
