Punta del Este bus terminal to stop intercity services

The bus terminal in Punta del Este is set to undergo a significant operational change, ceasing to accommodate interdepartmental and international bus services before the upcoming summer season. This shift, planned by the Maldonado Intendancy, will redirect these longer-distance routes to terminate at the Maldonado terminal.

Maldonado's Intendant, Miguel Abella, explained that the primary goal is to enhance mobility and traffic management in the Punta del Este area. The current influx of buses into the terminal contributes to congestion, and the Intendancy believes it is no longer essential for these services to reach Punta del Este directly.

While a precise date has not been set, the transport company COT indicated that interdepartmental buses will likely stop arriving at the Punta del Este terminal by November or December. During this transition, smaller vehicles may be used to transfer passengers between Maldonado and Punta del Este. The Punta del Este terminal will continue to operate for local bus services and ticket sales.

Abella clarified that the terminal itself will not close, only its function regarding longer-distance routes will change. The Intendancy is also considering improvements to the Maldonado terminal to handle the anticipated increase in passengers and services, with a reported investment of 15 million Uruguayan pesos for maintenance and upgrades.
