Queen Margrethe hospitalized with blood clot and dehydration

Former Danish Queen Margrethe has been hospitalized after doctors found a blood clot in her hip and diagnosed dehydration.

A statement from the Danish royal household said the 86-year-old queen felt unwell on Sunday and was taken immediately to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. “Queen Margrethe is in good spirits and, given the circumstances, is doing well,” the palace said.

She will remain in hospital under medical observation next week. As a result, she will not attend King Harald’s funeral in Oslo on Wednesday. The late head of state was Margrethe’s second cousin, and the two were described as close.

Margrethe was also hospitalized in the spring. On May 14, she suffered a heart attack and was taken to hospital. Doctors later diagnosed a major bleed in her hip.
