Raids in Romania Target Human Trafficking Ring Exploiting Women in Western Europe

In a significant operation targeting human trafficking and exploitation, Romanian law enforcement, in collaboration with DIICOT prosecutors, has carried out extensive raids across multiple counties. The coordinated action, involving 19 searches in Giurgiu, Ilfov, Dâmbovița, Vaslui, and the capital city of Bucharest, aims to dismantle a sophisticated organized crime group.

The investigation focuses on serious offenses including the formation of an organized criminal group, human trafficking, complicity, and pimping. Early findings suggest a disturbing pattern where members of the same family allegedly recruited and exploited four young women. These victims were reportedly induced into prostitution in Western European countries over a period of five years, with the perpetrators amassing illicit gains estimated at over 300,000 lei.

Authorities detailed how the alleged ringleader, a 26-year-old, was responsible for recruiting the victims, deceiving them by exploiting their vulnerability. Another family member, a 57-year-old woman, is accused of facilitating their travel to destination countries, overseeing their activities, and collecting earnings, which were then transferred back to Romania for management by a third group member. The investigation also revealed a separate case involving two other individuals who allegedly exploited three young women using the 'loverboy' method.
