Real Madrid signs Marc Cucurella from Chelsea

Real Madrid has secured the signing of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a six-year deal, marking their first acquisition since Jose Mourinho's return as manager. The transfer, reported to be worth up to 51.8 million pounds ($69.5 million), sees Cucurella commit to the club until June 30, 2032.

The acquisition comes as Real Madrid aims to strengthen its squad following a disappointing 2025-26 season, during which they failed to secure the LaLiga title and were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Club president Florentino Perez had pledged to bolster the team's defensive options during his recent re-election campaign.

Cucurella, 27, arrived at Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for a reported fee of up to 63 million pounds. He made 163 appearances for the west London club across all competitions. After a challenging first season, he became a regular starter under manager Enzo Maresca, often playing as an inverted full-back. He was part of the teams that won the Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025.

Internationally, Cucurella has been a key player for the Spanish national team since his debut in 2021, earning 23 caps and winning the European Championship in 2024. He is also part of Spain's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Earlier this year, he publicly voiced concerns about Chelsea's recruitment strategy, advocating for a better balance between youth and experience. Chelsea finished the 2025-26 Premier League season in 10th place, missing out on European qualification.
