Ghana coach Queiroz enters record books with 5th successive World Cup appearance

Carlos Queiroz, at 73, is set to enter the record books this week as he takes charge of Ghana for their Group L campaign against Panama. This marks his fifth consecutive World Cup appearance as a coach, a remarkable feat that matches the record previously set by Bora Milutinović.

Queiroz's coaching journey at the World Cup began with Portugal in 2010. He subsequently led Iran to three successive tournaments in 2014, 2018, and 2022. This continuous run of participation highlights his enduring presence in international football management.

While Queiroz matches Milutinović's record of five successive tournaments, Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira holds the record for the most World Cup appearances as a coach with six, though not consecutively. Queiroz's path to this tournament was unexpected; he was appointed by Ghana in April, replacing Otto Addo after a series of disappointing friendly results.

Before the call from Ghana, Queiroz's extensive career, which includes coaching Real Madrid and serving as Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United, seemed to be winding down. His last role was in Oman, making Ghana the eighth national team he has managed. Known for his cerebral and technical approach, Queiroz contrasts this with a sometimes animated presence on the sidelines.

In his native Portugal, Queiroz is recognized as a trendsetter who laid the groundwork for the nation's strong youth development. He gained prominence by leading Portugal to back-to-back U-20 World Cup titles in 1989 and 1991, nurturing a generation of stars like Luís Figo. Now, he aims to cap his storied career by guiding Ghana as far as possible in the World Cup. "I am prepared for this," he stated upon accepting the job.
