Record River Levels in Lithuania; Storm Causes Over 1 Million Euros in Damages

Several Lithuanian rivers have reached critical water levels following recent heavy rainfall, with the Leitė River near Kūlynai recording 257 cm, surpassing the critical threshold of 245 cm. The Šyša River near Šilutė also shows a dangerous level of 264 cm, exceeding its critical limit of 255 cm.

Significant water level increases have been recorded in other rivers as well, including Šešuvė near Skirgailiai (up to 185 cm), Minija near Priekulė (up to 135 cm), Bartuva near Skuodas (up to 117 cm), Venta near Papilė (up to 113 cm), Jūra near Tauragė (up to 104 cm), and Tenenys near Miestaliai (up to 90 cm).

Despite the current high levels, meteorologists do not anticipate a further significant rise in the coming days. While warm weather and scattered showers may cause slight increases in the southwestern part of the country, water levels in most rivers are expected to gradually decrease. No further record-breaking levels are predicted.

The recent storm that swept through Lithuania has resulted in substantial property damage, with insurance companies reporting eight times the usual number of claims for a summer weekend. "Swedbank" insurance company estimates preliminary payouts to exceed 1 million euros. Claims include damaged roofs, fences, house facades, and greenhouses caused by fallen trees and strong winds. The total amount of damages is expected to rise as all claims are registered.
