Red and Orange Alerts Issued for Extreme Cold, Rain, and Winds on Sunday, July 26

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a series of severe weather alerts, including red, orange, and yellow warnings, for extreme cold, heavy rainfall, snow, and strong winds across six provinces on Sunday, July 26. The SMN stated that some of these phenomena could pose significant dangers to society, life, property, and the environment.

A red alert for extreme cold has been declared for western Santa Cruz. This highest level warning signifies a high to extreme impact on health, with predicted temperatures expected to be "very dangerous" and potentially affect everyone, even those in good health. Meanwhile, yellow alerts for extreme cold are in place for southern and western Chubut, western Río Negro, and southwestern Neuquén. These conditions may cause mild to moderate health effects, with low temperatures posing particular risks to vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

In addition to the cold, orange and yellow alerts are active for heavy rainfall and potential snowfall. An orange alert covers southwestern Neuquén, anticipating strong and persistent precipitation with accumulated rainfall between 30 and 60 millimeters, possibly exceeding these amounts in some areas. Higher elevations may experience rain mixed with snow. Yellow alerts for persistent rain affect other parts of Neuquén and central and western Río Negro, with expected accumulations of 10 to 20 millimeters. The SMN advises residents to heed local authorities' instructions, avoid unnecessary travel, clear drainage systems, and stay away from flood-prone areas. Driving with caution and preparing emergency kits are also recommended.
