Red heatwave alert in Romania: dozens of medical interventions, one death

Romania is under a red code alert for extreme heat, resulting in 43 medical interventions nationwide within a single day. The Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) reported that one person died on the spot, and 31 adults required hospitalization due to the intense temperatures.

Between June 29, 2026, at 08:00 and 21:00, medical teams responded to numerous calls. Thirteen individuals received assistance from SMURD teams, while 30 were aided by SAJ units. The majority of cases involved symptoms such as fainting, headaches, and general malaise, conditions commonly associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Authorities are reiterating crucial protective measures for the public during this heatwave. These include maintaining constant hydration, avoiding alcohol and sugary or caffeinated beverages, and consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Particular attention is advised for children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses, who are most vulnerable to heat-related ailments.

The DSU confirmed that Interior Ministry structures remain mobilized to manage interventions related to the heatwave. Bucharest and three-quarters of the country are expected to remain under the red code alert until the morning of July 1, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 41 degrees Celsius. The National Energy Dispatch has implemented emergency measures to ensure the stable operation of the power grid.
