The Athletics had taken an early lead, scoring in the third inning and adding more runs in the fourth and sixth. However, the Red Sox chipped away at the lead, with Andruw Monasterio and Ceddanne Rafaela driving in runs in the fifth inning to tie the game.

In the pivotal eighth inning, Abreu connected on a pitch for a game-tying home run, followed immediately by Contreras, who hit a go-ahead blast. Greg Weissert and closer Aroldis Chapman then shut down the Athletics in the ninth, with Chapman securing his 26th save.
