Region’s tourism sector now losing $600 million daily: Prime Minister

The Egyptian tourism sector is facing an unprecedented crisis, with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announcing staggering daily losses of around $600 million. This dramatic downturn, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, stems from a sharp decrease in flights and a broader reluctance to travel to the Middle East, signaling a severe blow to the region's economy.

In a statement to the House of Representatives, Madbouly detailed the government's efforts to mitigate the repercussions of the global economic crisis on Egypt. The tourism industry, a vital pillar of the Egyptian economy, is particularly vulnerable to geopolitical instability and global economic shocks. The current situation exacerbates existing challenges, demanding urgent and comprehensive strategies for recovery.

Beyond tourism, the Prime Minister also touched upon the global food crisis, noting a 2.4 percent rise in the FAO Food Price Index compared to February. He echoed warnings from the United Nations World Food Programme about severe disruptions to global food supply chains, likening the current situation to the crises experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. This confluence of crises presents a complex and challenging environment for Egypt's economic stability and development.
