Report Illegal Dumping with a Photo in 14 Limburg Municipalities via Mijn Stadsapp: "Faster Intervention"

Illegal dumping has long been a source of frustration for residents across Limburg, tarnishing the beauty of our province and creating unnecessary burdens. VRT NWS is pleased to report on an innovative solution being implemented to combat this persistent problem.

The Mijn Stadsapp, a digital tool designed to connect citizens with their local government, has now integrated a feature specifically for reporting illegal dumping. In 14 municipalities, residents can now use their smartphones to take a photo of dumped waste, pinpoint its location, and submit a report with a single click. This direct line of communication is crucial for enabling authorities to act swiftly and decisively.

Municipalities like Lanaken are already expressing satisfaction with the new functionality. "We have had many problems with illegal waste in recent years, so we are very happy with this feature in the app," stated Jasmine Neven, alderman for Environment. While the full impact on the number of reports is yet to be seen, a promotional campaign is planned to encourage wider use and further deter offenders.

This initiative, developed in collaboration with students from Hogeschool PXL, represents a significant step towards cleaner Limburg communities. By empowering residents and streamlining the reporting process, the Mijn Stadsapp is poised to become an invaluable asset in the ongoing fight against illegal dumping. It highlights how technology can be effectively harnessed to address local environmental concerns and improve the quality of life for everyone in the region.
