Resilient Young Woman Overcomes Cancer, Receives Support for Prosthetic Leg

In a story that embodies the indomitable human spirit, Şevin Balakan's journey from a devastating cancer diagnosis to a triumphant pursuit of her dreams is an inspiration. Diagnosed with bone cancer at 15, Balakan endured a grueling five-year treatment in Bitlis, emerging victorious against the disease and refusing to let her education falter.

Her academic achievements continued as she gained admission to the Turkish Music State Conservatory at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University. However, fate dealt another blow when her cancer recurred during her studies, necessitating the amputation of her left leg. Undeterred, Balakan shared her aspiration to walk again with a prosthetic leg on social media, a plea that resonated widely.

Responding to this heartfelt call, Gaziantep Mayor Fatma Şahin immediately pledged support, initiating the process for Balakan's prosthetic limb. Medical evaluations confirmed her suitability for a prosthesis, and she was admitted to the Buğday Tanesi Prosthesis and Orthosis Production and Application Center. The process for creating and fitting her prosthetic leg began on May 4, 2026.

During a visit to Mayor Şahin, a visibly emotional Balakan shared her struggles and expressed profound gratitude for the assistance. She articulated her ambition to excel in performing arts. In a touching gesture, Mayor Şahin offered support for Balakan's upcoming marriage, including white goods and the possibility of officiating the wedding ceremony. Furthermore, Balakan will receive ongoing online physical therapy and rehabilitation support from municipal physiotherapists.
