Romania's PNL Party Exits Government, Declares Battle for Nation's Soul

Fifty of the fifty-four leaders present voted decisively to exit the current government and reject any future coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). This isn't just a party decision; it's a declaration of intent for Romania's future. The recent vote of no confidence, which saw the government fall with an overwhelming 281 votes, underscored that we are at a critical juncture.

On one side stands the new, toxic alliance of PSD and AUR, which we believe seeks to drag Romania back into an illiberal, isolated, corrupt, and anti-Western past, reminiscent of Belarus. On the other side, PNL, alongside USR and other right-wing forces, represents Romania's only anchor to a modernizing, European, and democratic future. The PSD's official entry into the anti-Western majority marks a definitive break after twenty years of damaging collaborations that have consistently ended in betrayal and immense losses for PNL – in prestige, electorate, and policy.

We are not a political vehicle for the left's interests or a platform for endless compromise. PNL was forged in sacrifice, built by those who paid with their freedom and lives for their ideals. As Gheorghe Brătianu, martyred by the communists, taught us: 'We cannot serve two truths at the same time: either you remain faithful, or you accept compromise.' We are at that point. There is no middle ground, no honorable compromise with those who sought to destroy us.
