Romanian forces down drone near Ukraine border

Romanian military forces downed a drone that illegally entered national airspace on Saturday morning, according to the Ministry of Defense. The drone was detected by radar systems at 8:22 a.m. near the border with Ukraine.

This event marks an intensification of unauthorized drone incursions along Romania's eastern border. It follows a significant mission on Friday, July 24, when an attack drone traversed approximately 200 kilometers of national territory. In that prior incident, after an Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon missed an interception in Brăila County, a Romanian F-16 shot down the unmanned aircraft near Padina, Buzău County.

The Ministry of Defense stated that the drone downed Saturday morning was hit by an F-16 fighter jet. The minister, Radu Miruță, did not provide additional details on the drone's origin, type, or the circumstances of its entry into Romanian airspace. The General Prosecutor's Office confirmed Friday evening that the drone downed in Buzău County was indeed a Shahed type, of Russian origin.

Following Saturday's detection, a RO-Alert message was issued to the public at 8:26 a.m., warning of potential falling objects and advising citizens to seek shelter in basements or civil protection shelters, or to stay indoors away from windows and exterior walls. The alert estimated a duration of 90 minutes.
