Romanian Marinica quits as Zimbabwe coach

HARARE, Zimbabwe – The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) announced on Monday the departure of Romanian coach Marian Marinica, who has stepped down from his role as head coach of the national football team, the Warriors. Marinica's resignation, attributed to undisclosed personal reasons, brings a premature end to his tenure, which began just last November on a one-year contract.

Marinica's time with the Warriors, though brief, saw the team qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco. Despite this achievement, the team's performance in the tournament was modest, failing to advance past the first round after drawing with Angola and suffering losses to Egypt and South Africa. From our perspective in Zimbabwe, while we appreciate the effort to qualify for the continental showpiece, the early exit was disappointing. The search for a coach who can elevate the team's performance and achieve greater success on the international stage is a perennial concern for Zimbabwean football.

In the interim, ZIFA has appointed former national team captain Kaitano Tembo as caretaker coach. Tembo will lead the Warriors into the upcoming Unity Cup tournament scheduled for May 26-30 in London, which will also feature India, Jamaica, and Nigeria. This tournament presents an opportunity for Tembo to make his mark and for the team to regroup. The appointment of a caretaker coach highlights the immediate need for stability as ZIFA likely begins the process of finding a permanent successor to Marinica, with the hope of finding a coach who can inspire the team to greater heights.
