Romanian woman sentenced to prison for axe attack on brother-in-law after food dispute

A domestic dispute over food and alcohol escalated violently in Romania's Iași County, resulting in a woman being convicted of attempted murder. The incident occurred on December 10, 2025, when the woman attacked her brother-in-law with an axe.

The argument reportedly began after the victim criticized the woman's cooking of cabbage with sausages. The situation quickly deteriorated, fueled by significant alcohol consumption by all parties involved. The dispute culminated when the woman, after retrieving an axe from a shed, struck her brother-in-law on the head as he stood outside the house.

Although the victim survived the blow, which struck him obliquely and did not cause life-threatening injuries requiring extensive medical attention, the court deemed the woman's actions as indicative of accepting the possibility of death. She was consequently sentenced for attempted murder, despite the victim not seeking damages. The woman claimed she acted out of anger, stating she could no longer tolerate the situation.

Authorities were alerted to the escalating conflict through multiple emergency calls. The victim, after being struck, lost consciousness but was revived by his brother. He required just over a week of medical care for his injuries. The woman confessed to the act during the investigation, attributing her actions to being overwhelmed by anger.
