Roy Suryo considers fourth pre-trial motion in fake diploma case

Indonesian public figure Roy Suryo is contemplating filing a fourth pre-trial motion, a legal maneuver he is pursuing after his second attempt was dismissed by the South Jakarta District Court on July 20, 2026. Suryo faces charges related to a "fake diploma."

His legal team, led by Abdul Gafur Sangadji, maintains that their persistent use of pre-trial motions is solely to protect Suryo's interests and not to obstruct the main legal proceedings. "Whether we are ready to face the main case, we are ready at any time," Sangadji stated.

Suryo's first pre-trial motion, filed earlier, successfully challenged his arrest, detention, and search, with the court declaring his detention unlawful on July 7, 2026. However, his second motion, filed on July 2, 2026, which questioned his designation as a suspect, was rejected by Judge I Ketut Darpawan. The judge cited the case's transfer to the prosecutor's office as rendering the motion irrelevant.

Suryo also has a third pre-trial motion scheduled for its first hearing on July 28, 2026. This motion specifically seeks compensation for his period of detention, which was previously declared unlawful. Suryo expressed uncertainty about the outcome of this compensation claim, noting that if it is denied, it would raise significant questions given the prior ruling. Sangadji added that any compensation received would be donated to foundations, the poor, and orphans.
