Rural electrification gathers pace

Fiji's commitment to providing clean electricity to its rural and maritime communities has gained significant momentum, with the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund Board approving a new series of renewable energy projects. A major focus of these approvals is a substantial rollout on Koro Island, alongside an upgrade for the Vio Island Solar Mini-Grid and continued progress on solar mini-grid installations in Kioa, Yacata, and Lakeba.

The Koro Island project is set to deliver clean and reliable electricity to 256 households and over 10 public buildings. Concurrently, the Vio Island upgrade will enhance power supply for 48 households and essential community facilities. The Board also greenlit a grant agreement with the Republic of Korea to finance another rural electrification project, the specific site for which is yet to be announced.

Paula Baleilevuka, FREF Board Chair and Permanent Secretary for Public Works, highlighted that these decisions signify a crucial transition from the planning phase to active project delivery. She emphasized that the initiatives underscore Fiji's dedication to broadening sustainable energy access for its remote communities.

The Stage 1 solar mini-grid program is anticipated to conclude by October of the following year, while the Vio Island upgrade is scheduled for completion by December 2026. These projects are integral to Fiji's broader strategy of achieving greater energy independence and sustainability across its archipelago.
