The European Union has channeled another 1.4 billion euros to Ukraine, utilizing profits from frozen Russian central bank assets. This latest disbursement is the fifth of its kind and the second this year, underscoring the EU's continued financial support for Kyiv amidst the ongoing conflict.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that Russia must be held accountable for the destruction it has caused. "We are using funds received from frozen Russian assets to ensure this requirement is met. We are transferring another 1.4 billion euros to Ukraine. This will help to continue fighting the illegal war instigated by Russia and meet Ukraine's urgent military and defense needs," she said in a statement.

Since the assets were frozen, they have generated approximately 8 billion euros in extraordinary profits. The EU Council decided that these profits would be allocated to aid Kyiv. Of the latest transfer, 95% will be directed to Ukraine through the Ukraine Loan Cooperation Mechanism (ULCM), while the remaining 5% will be channeled through the European Peace Facility (EPF).

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Shmyhal emphasized that the funds will bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and stability. "The response to Russian terror should be the strengthening of Ukraine. Russia must pay for every new crime," he wrote. This financial support is crucial for Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.
