Russian Attack on Kyiv Kills Three; Pentagon Official Resigns; Świątek Reaches US Open Second Round

Kyiv came under a major overnight Russian attack involving drones and ballistic missiles, with city authorities reporting three deaths and four wounded, including children.

The strikes set off fires across the Ukrainian capital and sent explosions through the city, while air-raid alerts remained active through Monday evening and returned several times overnight. At least eight more people were wounded in Kyiv region. A five-story residential building was among the structures damaged in Boryspil, on the outskirts of Kyiv, according to regional military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko.

Olga Rudenko, editor-in-chief of the Kyiv Independent, described it as “the biggest missile attack on Kyiv in some time.”

The overnight developments also included a change at the Pentagon. Dan Driscoll, the deputy defense secretary responsible for overseeing the U.S. Army, resigned, the White House said. National Security Council spokesperson Anna Kelly confirmed the resignation and praised Driscoll’s achievements. The report linked his departure to a conflict with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Driscoll had advocated broad reforms for the Army, including cooperation with business and a plan to buy tens of thousands of inexpensive drones. He was also viewed as a rising figure in the administration and had taken part in negotiations with Ukraine over ending the war. One reported source of tension with Hegseth was Hegseth’s unexpected dismissal of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, with whom Driscoll had a good relationship.

In sports, Iga Świątek advanced to the second round of the US Open by defeating China’s Xiyu Wang 6-2, 6-3. She joined Kamil Majchrzak and Hubert Hurkacz in the next round. Her next opponent will be Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska.
