Ruta Viva highway in Quito to have partial closures starting August 15 for rehabilitation

Quito's Ruta Viva highway is set to undergo significant rehabilitation and safety upgrades, necessitating partial lane closures for approximately 120 days starting August 15, 2026. The Metropolitan Public Company of Mobility and Public Works (EPMMOP) will lead the project, which aims to improve circulation and road safety on this vital artery connecting the capital with its eastern valleys and the international airport.

The rehabilitation work will be carried out progressively in sections and lanes, affecting both directions of traffic. However, a complete closure of the Ruta Viva is not anticipated. The Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) will implement contraflow measures during various stages to maintain vehicular flow. The initial phase of construction will focus on the stretch between the Intervalles interchange and Jaime Salvador street.

Following the completion of the first stage, the project will extend to two other sectors: the area between Gaspar de Carvajal street and Los Cipreses street, and the section from Las Orquídeas street to La Cerámica street. Civil Transit Agents will be present in the work zones to manage traffic and facilitate contraflows.

Drivers traveling to the Mariscal Sucre International Airport are advised to use alternative routes such as Avenida Oswaldo Guayasamín or Vía Collas. The AMT urges motorists to plan their journeys in advance, adhere to the installed signage, and follow the instructions of the transit agents. The Ruta Viva is a key expressway forming part of Quito's urban ring road, crucial for access to the northeastern areas of the Metropolitan District and fostering development in the Cumbayá and Tumbaco valleys.
