RWE Halts US Offshore Wind Projects After $1.22 Billion Deal with US Government

German energy giant RWE has abandoned its offshore wind projects in US waters, agreeing to a significant settlement of $1.22 billion with the US government. This decision marks a major shift for the company, which had invested over $1 billion in the planning stages for wind farms off the coasts of New York, California, and Louisiana.

Under the agreement, RWE's US wind power subsidiary will forfeit its claims against the government and return lease rights for these offshore locations. The company cited a lack of foreseeable permitting feasibility for these projects as the reason for their cancellation. Instead, RWE plans to redirect its investments towards liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other gas projects within the United States.

The move occurs against a backdrop of strong opposition to wind power from former US President Donald Trump, a vocal critic who has consistently advocated for fossil fuels, particularly coal. Trump has previously labeled wind turbines as "ugly" and described wind power as a "green fraud" and "perhaps the biggest scam in history."

US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that Americans "deserve an energy system that is based on common sense – and not one that depends on costly subsidies or technologies that cannot meet our country’s current energy needs." He welcomed the agreement with RWE and the company's commitment to investing in projects that keep electricity affordable for American consumers and ensure reliable baseload power. A department spokesperson also noted that offshore wind energy remains heavily reliant on foreign supply chains.
