Rybakina Advances, Fernandez Stuns Andreeva at Toronto Masters

Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina continued her strong performance at the Toronto Masters, securing a spot in the Round of 16 by defeating Ann Li of the United States with a score of 6-2, 7-5.

Rybakina, the second seed, will next face Russia's Liudmila Samsonova, who had a tougher match against Australia's Maya Joint. Despite Samsonova holding a historical edge in their head-to-head record, Rybakina has won their last two encounters, including the Strasbourg final last year, giving her a potential morale advantage.

Meanwhile, the tournament saw a major upset as Canadian Leylah Fernandez stunned French Open champion Mirra Andreeva. Fernandez secured a decisive straight-sets victory, 6-1, 6-4, ending a seven-match losing streak against top-10 opponents.

"The main key for me was to stay positive, strong, and patient. She (Andreeva) wasn't going to give easy points," Fernandez stated after her win. "I know my body is strong enough for long rallies. So if I have to hit 100 balls to break her rhythm, I will do it."

Fernandez is now set to play four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the next round. Osaka advanced easily, defeating Elise Mertens, while another American favorite, Coco Gauff, also progressed to the Round of 16 after beating Greece's Maria Sakkari.
