San Miguelito Cable Car: Mulino announces key construction milestone

The ambitious cable car project connecting Panama and San Miguelito has reached a crucial milestone, with President José Raúl Mulino announcing the evaluation commission's positive report on the sole proposal received. The project, designed to transform urban mobility, has advanced following the submission of an offer by the Austrian company Doppelmayr Panama Corp., a specialist in cable transport systems.

Mulino expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, "San Miguelito will have its cable car!" He highlighted Doppelmayr's international presence and emphasized the project's potential to significantly improve transportation for thousands of Panamanians. The proposed system is valued at over B/.255 million, excluding ITBMS, and encompasses all stages from design and construction to operational delivery and maintenance.

Doppelmayr's proposal was the only one submitted during the Metro of Panama's open bidding process. The offer must now undergo further technical, economic, administrative, and legal evaluations before a contract can be awarded. This step is critical after a previous bidding process failed to attract any offers, leading the government to modify the contracting scheme and re-launch the tender under a "best value" bid modality.

The planned 6.6-kilometer cable car line will feature six stations, aiming to provide a vital alternative to ground transportation in densely populated areas with challenging topography. Its integration with the existing Metro de Panamá network is a key component, promising enhanced connectivity between the two districts and improved access to public transport for residents.
