Sandinistas commemorate Fidel Castro's centenary at Managua monument

Nicaragua's ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) marked the 100th anniversary of Fidel Castro's birth with a ceremony at a new monument in Managua. Public employees, military personnel, police officers, and members of the Sandinista youth movement congregated along the 'Bolívar a Chávez' avenue, where the large metal sculpture of the former Cuban leader was installed.

Here lives Fidel, in his people and in our peoples and in this America of ours, of burning suns, of intense souls, of brave human beings, who vibrate in the splendors of our highest ideals, feelings and struggle for justice, for true truth, for the peace that demands, that claims dignity.

Attendees paid tribute to Castro with Cuban flags and bouquets of flowers. Vice President Rosario Murillo, speaking through official media, stated that Fidel lives on in the people and in the ideals of justice, truth, and peace. Managua's mayor, Reyna Rueda, echoed this sentiment, calling Castro an enduring "beacon of inspiration" for militants and revolutionaries, encouraging the strengthening of peace and Nicaraguan consciousness.

Murillo, who is also the wife of Vice President Daniel Ortega, had previously criticized those who opposed the monument. She labeled these critics as "traitors and cowards" exhibiting "deep darkness, wickedness, and malignancy." The monument itself is a 13-meter-tall, full-body depiction of Castro, surrounded by silhouetted metal trees. It is situated in a park adjacent to the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, opposite the National Assembly.
